    I will join SADTU.

I have always been a member of a student union since my secondary education. SADTU seems to be a union that represents most of the teachers in South Africa. I align myself with its goal and principles to eradicate all forms of discrimination in education and to strive towards a free and democratic system of education in South Africa.

As I begin my teaching career, I have started researching different teaching unions in South Africa, and one that stands out to me is the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU). SADTU is the largest teachers’ union in South Africa and is affiliated with COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions). It represents a wide range of educators and promotes the rights and professional development of teachers while also advocating for quality public education.

      Why I Selected SADTU

I chose to focus on SADTU for several reasons:

      • Strong Representation: Being the largest teachers’ union, SADTU has significant influence in negotiations and policy discussions affecting the teaching profession. This gives its members a stronger collective voice when it comes to employment rights, working conditions, and salaries.
      • Professional Development: SADTU offers various training workshops, seminars, and support systems that can help me grow professionally and stay informed about developments in education.
      • Legal and Workplace Protection: The union provides legal assistance and support in workplace-related disputes, which is important for new teachers who may not yet be familiar with all policies or procedures.
      • Focus on Equality and Social Justice: SADTU aligns with values of social justice, transformation, and equality in education, which resonate with my own beliefs about inclusive, fair, and learner-centred education.

My Feelings About Joining a Union

Initially, I was unsure about whether joining a union was necessary. However, as I learned more, I came to appreciate the role that unions play in supporting educators’ rights and professional well-being. Teaching can be both rewarding and challenging, and knowing that I have the backing of a professional body makes me feel more secure and supported.

I also see union membership as a way to stay connected to the broader teaching community. It offers a platform for collaboration, shared learning, and collective advocacy. I feel more confident knowing that there is an organisation working to protect my interests and improve the education system for both teachers and learners.

SADTU is the right one for me. It is reliable and always there for it’s members. It is the only visible organization amongst them all.

Good day. I have recently joined the SAOU. I chose this union for various reasons. One of the reasons that stand out is the availability of many online courses and workshops. Teaching at a rural school far from the nearest town, online attendance is essential. SAOU are also very well equiped to guide in any query relating to matters of employment even if it is just to provide clarity on matters I am unsure of as a new teacher.

I don’t see the importance of a union because they are like political parties, and they also waste contact time due to meetings.

SAOU (Suid Afrikaanse Onderwys Unie) is an organization that aims to unite and support South African teachers and educators. Here are some reasons why I joined SAOU
    1. Professional development: Offers training and development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and stay updated on best practices.

    2. Advocacy: SAOU advocates for teachers’ rights, better working conditions, and improved education policies.

    3. Networking opportunities: SAOU events and conferences offer chances to connect with fellow educators, share ideas

    4. Personal growth: Being part of SAOU can lead to personal growth, as members develop new skills, build confidence, and make a positive impact on education.

    5. Protection and support: SAOU offers legal support, counseling, and guidance for members facing challenges or disputes in the workplace.

    6. Contribution to education: By joining SAOU, members can contribute to shaping education policies, improving teaching conditions, and enhancing student learning experiences.

I am an active member of Sadtu. The reason for choosing them is because of their values and understanding of the department and environment of educators. They respect the values of educators and follow all correct procedures where necessary. A union like them follow and needs to always follow all correct procedures and be up. To date with all law changes and the effects thereof.

I will join SADTU, already received some information from a site steward at the school, that they organise workshops and teachers development training about educational legislations such as policies and education Act’s. They also support teachers to lodge disputes, resolve issues and to connect them creating a conducive working environment.

<pre data-placeholder=”Translation” aria-label=”Translated text” data-ved=”2ahUKEwi9u8rkgcmGAxW2ZkEAHWnREZEQ3ewLegQIBRAU”>SAOU – The union is suitable for members who prefer to communicate in their language – Afrikaans. The union is always helpful and replies quickly to E-mails. The union aims to develop their members to the best of their ability with free workshops and information sessions. The union shares important information, from the department, so it becomes known to them.

I would like to apply to the SAOU, to be a member.

Part of being an eductor is to belong to a union that represents and serves your best interests and needs. However, teachers no longer have faith in unions. Unions are failing and selling us. What happens when unions fail to do that which they are intended to do for the betterment of the masses of teachers? I say, ban unions.
