As a newly appointed educator, I have noticed that learners do not understand the psychological impact of being laughed at by fellow learners while attempting to express an opinion during class. I strive to encourage them to ‘stop and think’ how this would feel when tables were turned, how is this different from bullying, how this will compromise the learner’s self-esteem, how this takes away their right of expression. The language of instruction (English) seems to be a challenge for learners, and I feel that it is critical to always encourage them to make mistakes and build a vocabulary (through making mistakes), I believe that in time, this will improve how they respond on paper during an assessment. Sticking to a mother tongue is not always beneficial, the fellow learners are however, not always patient and understanding when grammar mistakes are made.
